SKIL2

There's a lot of discussion online about personal learning environments (PLE's) and while I like a semantics discourse as much as the next woman - I'm really more interested in what it is and how I can make it useful for my public.

The kind of PLE that I want to design for SKIL2 will have a number of features:-

1. Space to save any interesting files, videos, photos that a person finds on the SKIL2 main site as well as their own online searches.
2. Space to note experience, skills, learning - a kind of cool resume/portfolio. Could be in different sections that link together.
3. Space for a personal learning plan.
4. Space for a kind of stream of consciousness journal that only has meaning and purpose for that person.
5. A calendar to note learning events or opportunities.
6. Clear links to all elements of the main SKIL2 site with capacity to add to them from the PLE.

If it was your online personal learning environment - what goodies would you like in it?

Remember, there is also the main page that has a plethora of learning spaces.

Thanks
Liz

Nothing like talking to myself!

I'll be using these forums to note and track information on the specific topics that will help develop SKIL2.

Today I went to Edutools. You pick learning technology products and they can do comparative analysis on them - on a wide range of criteria.

Now - not all the platforms I know about were there - but - they had some of the key products - Blackboard, Moodle, Sakai & Joomla.

I had them do an analysis of Moodle, Sakai & Joomla because they are all open source and I know that Moodle and Sakai have developed a broad reach.

Very thorough analysis.

I haven't made any decision yet but for some reason I have a feeling about Sakai - even though Moodle has a larger user population.

We'll see.

Been looking at eportfoilis for reflection on learning and while learning and as such PSEs to an extent. Working within moodle and webct, I have to say this is one software that I haven't really been convinced by. If I had to pick though at the moment I would be looking at 2-pebblepad because it has such as easy interface , and mahara because it is open source.

Thanks Claudia.

When you day that 'this is one software that I haven't really been convinced by' - do you mean Sakai or Moodle?

I'll have a look at Mahara.

sorry should have been clearer, i was referring to the PSEs or eportfolio systems. Both moodle and webct(haven't seen sakai) have tools that would work well as eportfolio systems. so what I was saying is I don't quite get the need for a seperate system when those are already in place.

gotcha- that makes complete sense.

I was planning to use either Moodle or Sakai as the LMS platform and use their tools so people could create personal learning spaces/e portfolio's.

Thanks though for the clarification.

Because I'm relatively new to all this I'm making sure I don't assume anything. Clarity helps me move through some of the other confusion!
